For Canadian exporters, sustainable supply chains can reduce risks and environmental impacts, while improving their competitiveness in international markets.
Export Development Canada (EDC) is committed to supporting Canadian companies on implementing responsible environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices.
By investing in supply chain sustainability, exporters can reduce risk, strengthen resilience and position their businesses for long-term success in an increasingly sustainability driven global economy.
In practical terms, a sustainable supply chain focuses on:
Global supply chains account for a significant share of the world’s carbon emissions, and small- and mid-sized enterprises (SMEs) make up the majority of businesses within those supply chains. This means exporters of all sizes have a role to play—and an opportunity to make meaningful improvements.
Less waste, higher efficiency among ESG benefits.
Every exporter is at a different stage of their sustainability journey. According to MELLOHAWK Logistics, even small operational changes can lead to meaningful environmental improvements.
In one case, a Canadian exporter was under constant time pressure and relied heavily on fast, carbon-intensive shipping methods. By re-evaluating delivery timelines and co-ordinating more closely with customers, the company was able to consolidate shipments into fewer, larger loads.
This change reduced emissions, lowered costs and improved overall supply chain efficiency—without compromising customer relationships.
Non-sustainable supply chains often create hidden risks for exporters. These risks can affect reputation, employee safety, compliance and long-term profitability.
Common examples include:
For example, overstocking inventory can lead to unnecessary energy use in warehousing and increased transportation emissions. Adopting just in time production and shipping models—where feasible—can help exporters reduce waste, lower costs and operate more sustainably.
Alternatively, if you’re importing components from another country, you need to know how they were manufactured to avoid the risk of unethical labour practices.
ESG provides a broader framework for measuring environmental, social impact, ethical commitments, and governance performance, often used by investors and partners.
By embedding sustainability into procurement and logistics, exporters can strengthen their ESG performance, identify risks earlier and ensure that sustainability goals are supported throughout the entire supply chain.
Improving supply chain sustainability doesn’t always require large investments. Many exporters can take practical, low-cost steps to make a big difference.
Low-cost ways exporters can improve supply chain sustainability
Another effective first step is to signal priorities clearly. Let suppliers know that sustainability matters to your business and ask them to share low- or no-cost ideas they can implement to help reduce environmental impacts.
Sustainable supply chains are no longer just a “nice to have.” For Canadian exporters, they can be a source of competitive advantage—helping businesses win contracts, meet international standards and build stronger relationships with global buyers.
