Cultural tips for doing business in Japan

Read this Export Development Canada overview on etiquette style in this key market.

Tokyo skyline illuminated at night.

From its iconic cherry blossoms, temples and shrines and samurai culture to robotics, speedy bullet trains, anime and celebrated cuisine, Japan’s culture fascinates with a blend of ancient traditions, modern innovations and vibrant pop culture. A leader in advanced technology and manufacturing, this island nation has a highly educated population of more than 122 million people and is the world’s fourth-largest economy, which boasts a significant consumer market.

As Canada’s third-largest export market, our two countries have enjoyed a long history of diplomatic relations dating to the 1920s. As Canada pursues opportunities in the Indo-Pacific, our strategic partnership with Japan is vital. With two-way trade totalling around $35 billion annually, our top exports include:

  • agricultural products (wheat, canola seeds, soyabeans, meats);
  • metal and minerals;
  • forestry products;
  • medical devices; and
  • pharmaceuticals.

As members of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), which came into force in 2018, Canadian exporters and investors benefit from advanced market access in Japan with reduced, or an elimination of tariffs, on most key exports.

As part of Export Development Canada’s (EDC) Indo-Pacific strategy to boost trade and investments in the region, we now have representation in Tokyo, Japan, to better serve Canadian companies seeking to expand into the region. Our team there focuses on creating new pathways for Canadian companies to do business in Japan and take full advantage of opportunities in this compelling market.

“Japan is one of Asia’s main business hubs and remains one of the gateways to the region,” says Diane Belliveau, EDC’s regional vice-president, East Asia and Oceania.

Check out our insightful EDC guide to discover Japan’s complex social conventions—from chopstick etiquette and bowing to its formal meeting style and the importance of building trust and strong relationships.
