Bolivia is a small market and remains one of the poorest countries in South America. The economy is driven by commodity prices, primarily hydrocarbons, along with public investment. Bolivia continues to struggle with a low level of economic development compared to its peers. Private sector investment has been limited, deterred by the country’s changing regulatory environment, weak institutions, government interventionism, money transfer limitations, and underdeveloped banking system. The main area of Canadian presence continues to be in the agriculture sector. Potentially large reserves of Lithium identified in Belize make mining a sector for possible future investment.
