Gabon is a relatively small, overwhelmingly oil-driven, middle-income economy. Once the third largest oil producer in sub-Saharan Africa, Gabon has dropped to the sixth largest oil producer in the region. Although oil continues to dominate Gabon’s economy, the government is taking efforts to diversify into other sectors. Gabon’s oil wealth, although forecast to continue declining as oil reserves diminish, will provide a significant source of revenue for the foreseeable future. At the same time, the government’s economic diversification efforts provide opportunities for exporters and investors in other sectors, including in the underdeveloped agricultural and mining sectors.
