Belize is a small economy with limited opportunities. Over the medium-term, real GDP growth is not expected to grow significantly due to declining oil production, although it may be offset by higher output of other commodity exports, tourism and construction. The country’s high and growing debt levels and lack of financing options remain a significant challenge for Canadian exporters. External shocks such as vulnerability to natural disasters, along with violent crime and unemployment are also major threats to doing business in Belize.
