New representation aims to deepen trade and investment ties between the two nations

Export Development Canada (EDC) today announced the official opening of its representation in Manila—EDC’s 11th representation in the Indo-Pacific region. This expansion marks an exciting step forward in EDC’s Indo-Pacific strategy. With its new representation, EDC is strategically positioned to provide Canadian companies with the on-the-ground support and insights needed to capitalize on opportunities in one of the Indo-Pacific’s fastest-growing economies.

Canadian merchandise exports to the Philippines have grown by 71% between 2019 to 2023, with bilateral merchandise trade totaling $3.4 billion in 2023. With its strategic location, vibrant economy and robust growth in international trade and investments, the Philippines offers Canadian businesses vast opportunities in sectors like agri-food, cleantech, infrastructure, and information and communications technology (ICT).

“The Philippines represents an important gateway for Canadian companies looking to expand in the Indo-Pacific,” said Mairead Lavery, President and CEO, EDC. “With a large well-educated English-speaking workforce, increased investments in infrastructure and its business-friendly environment, the Philippines provides ample opportunities for Canadian exporters that are well-prepared to grow their market share and thrive. Our Manila representation will allow us to better address the needs of Canadian exporters by connecting them with Filipino partners and providing them with important market insights and our financing solutions. We look forward to our continued collaboration with our in-market partners to unlock the incredible opportunities for Canadian trade.”

The new EDC representation also comes at a notable moment, as Canada and the Philippines celebrate 75 years of strong bilateral relations. This longstanding partnership is supported by deep people-to-people ties and shared priorities in areas such as food safety and security, science, technology and innovation. Additionally, the Philippines’ emphasis on infrastructure development and renewable energy initiatives aligns with Canada’s strength. With close to 200 flagship infrastructure projects underway, the Philippines is prioritizing critical sectors where Canadian companies have proven expertise. In addition, the government’s goal to increase renewable energy’s share to 50% of its energy mix by 2040 presents substantial opportunities for Canadian firms in the cleantech sector.

“It was a pleasure to bring our Team Canada Trade Mission to Manila this past week, building partnerships and establishing new connections between Canadian and Philippine companies. This year marks 75 years of diplomatic relations between Canada and the Philippines, and this new EDC representative office in Manila is an excellent example of our commitment to further strengthening Canadian opportunities in this fast-growing market,” said The Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development.

Beyond creating opportunities, EDC’s staff in both Canada and on the ground collaborate closely with Government of Canada trade partners; working alongside the Trade Commissioner Service and Global Affairs Canada to help Canadian businesses navigate the challenges of entering new markets. With extensive in-market expertise, financing solutions and connections with key local partners, EDC’s presence in Manila will provide vital support to Canadian companies interested in tapping into the Philippines’ growing demand for infrastructure, renewable energy projects and premium consumer food products. The Manila representation complements EDC’s existing representations in New Delhi, Mumbai, Shanghai, Beijing, Sydney, Jakarta, Seoul, Tokyo and Ho Chi Minh City as well as its branch in Singapore.
